Handover notes that survive the week

A handover that lives in a chat message is lost by Tuesday. The fix is not discipline; it is putting the note where the next person will already be looking.

The three-part note

  1. State: what is true right now, in one line.
  2. Next action: the single thing that must happen next, and who owns it.
  3. Traps: what was already tried and failed, so nobody repeats it.

Written inside the conversation, these three lines mean the customer never has to repeat themselves, and the person taking over does not have to read forty messages.

What to avoid

Long narratives. A handover is an index, not a story. If it takes more than a minute to read, it will be skimmed.
